NCAA Sanctions

I know I said I was going to blog quite a bit of Christmas break and even though this is only the second time that I have done so, I really don't see it as a problem. Throughout break I have been spending some quality time at the Coldwater Cafe in the hometown to make a little bit of money and I am proud to say that I have already made enough to make up for the cash spent on Christmas presents. Not too bad if I say so myself. This evening I returned from Gallia County, which for those of you who do not know is hella far away from Tipp City in about as far southeast as you can get in Ohio. If you go any further you cross the bridge and enter into Mountaineer country. My reason for going there yesterday morning was to visit my girlfriend and see where she comes from and all that. I have a new found respect for my two roommates who have girlfriends who do not go to Ohio State and as a result rarely get to see them because this Christmas break has been rather frustrating for me. Now I ...

Hitting the Books, Finals, and Freedom

So I know that it has been over a month since I last posted on here, and even though it seems like every single time I write on here I vow that I am going to write more and all that, but this time I'm not going to say anything. Life gets busy, and it wasn't until now that I took the time to sit down and type some thoughts on my MacBook Pro. I believe that in my last blog post I discussed my excitement over the three day weekend that was on the horizon as well as missing Ohio State's football game against Indiana due to my club team having a tournament at home. A lot has happened since then, so let's get to it. Finals for Autumn quarter of 2011 were this past week, so naturally the majority of my time was spent in the library as well as other random classrooms in order to get on that study grind. A lot of people love finals week, because even though the preparations that are needed in order to feel ready for your final examinations can get extensive, not having classes t...

Three. Day. Weekend

I know that a lot of people may get a little annoyed with the words that I am planning on saying in this post in how I am going to describe my feelings about having a three day weekend (most likely the older folk-if there are any who actually read this-who do not get the three day weekend) but I really do not care. So in the words of Bo Ryan, "Deal with it." A lot of people do not understand the magnitude of a three day weekend. I try to take each and every one of them with open arms because I know that I really only have about two or three more years of the enjoyment that comes along with them. I think that this upcoming three day weekend is special because of everything leading up to it. Last weekend I spent the majority of my time in the RPAC due to my club team holding its 6th annual hoops challenge. It was a solid event, with 35 total teams playing. The teams ranged from New York to Missouri and we made a nice little profit off it as well. The only thing I had against it...

The Nuisance That Is Basketball Tickets

Ok, so I realize it's going on three weeks since my last blog post. I also realize that I say that pretty much every time I get on here to actually write something down. I realize all of this, but calm your senses and listen to me for just a few sentences so I can try and explain myself. College is time. Time is college. My good buddy Scott Westphal once said that to me, and when I gave him a queer look all he said was, "This is how college is to me. All the time in the world, yet no time in the world." I took that to heart because both the fact that I love the kid to death and he is absolutely right. When you're in college you are paying for your education (obviously), so you can decide what to do with your time because in a way you are paying for it. You can choose to go to class, utilize libraries and teaching assistants, and do everything you possibly can to better yourself while you are earning your degree. Or you can opt for the alternate of going to class whene...

Closing The Book On Nebraska

Now, I said to myself that I was going to blog before I left for the great Midwest last Friday. That did not happen of course, as all of my three readers will be able to attest, and for that I apologize. I simply ran out of time, which I know is not a very good excuse but it is the best I've got. I was not able to write anything on here until just now because of many obvious reasons. The most obvious was my trip to Huskerland this past weekend. Now, I had stated three things that I was rather curious about in my last post, so I plan on revisiting them during this post. Before I get into that though, I must say that I had one helluva time in Nebraska. Sure driving the thirteen hours apiece there and back and watching Ohio State blow a 21 point 3rd quarter lead was extremely far from enjoyable, but I those are the only two things I have to complain about. The atmosphere was absolutely unheard of, and nearly all the people there were awesome. There were at least five separate instance...

Pants Party?

So, as this school week slowly progresses (come on Friday afternoon) I cannot help but find myself wondering what it's going to be like in a few years when I graduate and move on from Ohio State. As much as I may complain with how busy I "always" am with classes, Mount activities and events, and club basketball conditioning/practices as well as the duties that come along with being the Vice President of a student organization it really does not compare to life ahead. What I mean by that is that there really is no reason in the world that I (or any of us college kids) should whine and fuss with our life while we are in college. We're in college for goodness sakes. It's the best time of you life. And if you say high school is/was the best time of you life, well, I have no words for you. You may wonder why I am so anxious for Friday to come, and that is because on that afternoon I will be embarking on a trip that I have never done before. That is to Lincoln, Nebraska...

When The Going Is Tough

As I open my laptop to write this blog post during halftime of the Green Bay and Denver football game (Green Bay is ahead 28-17 thanks to Aaron Rodgers' God-like qualities on the field) I can't help but say to myself, "I really never thought things would get this bad." Of course what I am referring to and what you probably already know is that the Buckeyes are just not where they need to be. I know all of the wreckage that came from the tattoo situation really makes things difficult as we try and break in a new coach, quarterback, and everything else but I mean we still are Ohio State. Throughout the summer I continued to be confident and say that we still have guys who can play and we won't take a big step back. Unfortunately, things aren't like that. I mean, it feels like our offense is just stuck in neutral. Freshman Braxton Miller was named the starter after the Miami loss, and after winning last week against lowly Colorado he looked like well, an ...

Man, I Missed This City

After not blogging for just under three weeks time, I have finally found some free time in my busy schedule to sit on my comfy new office chair and type some words at you folks. A lot has happened since my last post, which if I am not mistaken occurred on the day of the first game of the 2011 NFL season. Green Bay played that night, and beat New Orleans in very exciting fashion. They have continued their winning ways in route to a 3-0 start behind the arm of my boy Aaron Rodgers. In a word he is phenomenal. Enough about my pro football time for now though, like I said I've got loads to talk about. Before I get into it thought I must apologize for my Mark Titus-esk absence from the blogosphere. I moved back to Columbus on September the 13th, and bummed off of people until that following Sunday when I moved into my spacious apartment. Some of you may be wondering why I came back to Columbus so early, and it is because I volunteered my time to assist with the Mount Leadership Society...

An Abundance of Impatience

This might very well be the earliest in the day that I have ever posted anything on here, but it is for a good reason. I could not wait to get to bed last night so today would come faster and woke up at around 8 a.m. excited as a little kid on Christmas morning. Or just as excited as I get on Christmas morning. Christmas come early this year because of what happened this past February in the 'House That Jerry Built' when Green Bay won Super Bowl XLV. As soon as that game was over, and pairing it with the whole lockout deal making this season a possible afterthought, I quickly began to count down the days until tonight. It's the first time since the year 2000 that the last two Super Bowl Champions will meet in their season openers, and I couldn't be more excited. Yes, it is going to be great to watch Green Bay lit up and bask in the glory of the city's 13th NFL championship (more than any other franchise I might add) and for all the pregame festivities that are only ...

How Good It Feels

So it has been nearly a solid week since I've been on here, and one could argue that I've simply been basking in the glory of not having to work at Meijer Distribution Center anymore. This statement would in fact be very true, but in addition to it I would include the fact that I went to Miami this weekend to visit one of my best friends from high school. I certainly had a grand ole time, and miss that guy a whole bunch. It was great that it worked out where I was able to go see him and spend the weekend getting the full Redhawk experience. We went out Saturday night when it was scorching out and humid, which was something that I guess was very unorthodox for this time of year. I say that because the day after as well as Labor Day were quite the contrast. It was rather disheartening when I walked outside and the temperature was in the 60s-I could not help but say "Holy cow it's cold." In reality, it really was not too bad of a temperature I just was not used to it...

I love pumpkin pie

As I sit here looking at my computer screen trying to figure out what to talk about on this, the final day of the month of August, I heard something that I have not witnessed in a morning in quite some time-rain. The few rain showers that graced the Miami Valley today were nothing gargantuan by any means, but because this summer has been so hot and dry and I honestly cannot remember the last time it rained in the morning time I was pretty pumped. As I went outside to go for a morning run I noticed how it was rather overcast and extremely cool. I loved the cool part of it, especially last night because it made for a great sleeping atmosphere. Nothing better than snuggling up under your covers for a solid nap. Yesterday was my final day off during a work week for the summer, and I spent it trekking up north and back multiple times. Dad wanted to get my mother's car new brakes so we took it to her cousin's house because he has done that type of work for us before. He lives lit...

The Final Week

Yesterday marked the commencement of my final week of work at Meijer Distribution Center. I'm not going to talk about it anymore, except for maybe my last day when I'm sure I won't be able to control my happiness much like a little kid in a candy store. But all I can say is that it's been real. Now I'm going to take my money and run. Yesterday was a bit of a trying one for my family and I, as news broke about one of my family members falling ill very early in the morning. I prayed for him both at church and while I was at work and I trust that the grace of God will help him get through the pain he is dealing with and back to the health that he needs to be at. At work yesterday we had ten people call off (look, I know I said I wasn't going to talk about it anymore but I'm using this as a segway) and two more come in late because of how late they worked the night before. That marks the second time that at least ten people called off since I've worked t...

Not An Unfortunate Son

On my day off on Thursday I went ahead and did whatever my heart desired, which is what I believe is expected of people who work at places like Meijer Distribution Center. I did some things around the house, prepared lunch for my father and I, and played some video games-something I had not done in a very long time. I even got my Club Tril shirt in the mail, which could very well quickly become the best purchase I have ever made. I was unaware that I was also going to receive a photo of Mark "The Shark" Titus as well as a Club Tril sticker, so needless to say I was pretty excited. Mom has to work late on Thursdays during the school year because it is a "shopping" day for Dayton area school teachers. As a result of this I met her there around 6 p.m. and once she was ready left with her to go grab some food and head to the Fairfield Mall to make some purchases for school. She bought me my first pair of boating shoes I guess one would call them-I just see them as a...

Shock at the Summit

For as long as I can remember, I have been a die hard basketball fan. I love the game, and can remember countless Saturday nights during the winters of my childhood trying to convince my Dad to let me stay awake so I can watch the late west coast college games on ESPN when I knew I should have been in bed so I wasn't a cranky little baby the next day. It did not matter who was playing or if the games were close or not I just loved watching the game to see if anything exciting would happen. Plus, if the teams that were playing had a good chance of getting in the NCAA tournament I would want to know what they brought to the table to see how many games-if any-they could win. Now that I am a little older and I would hope to think more mature, if a game is on that gets out of hand or is between two teams that I do not really care about I either change the channel or turn it off to look for something more productive to do. I don't always do so, but sometimes I do-I guess it's j...

Glorious Day Off

After polishing off a Sam's Club Take n' Bake pizza with my dad and doing some small things around the house I realized that I have already gone back on my word of blogging everyday. I apologize and I hate to continue to blame work but it's all I have to blame for the rest of this week and the next. Works sucks. Anybody who works at Meijer Distribution Center knows that. It sucks so much that a vast majority of my co-workers have been taking advantage of the system and calling off like it's their job. Personally, I both understand and don't understand their methods behind doing such an act, for different reasons. I do understand it because of the simple fact of how much the job sucks complete ass. Your body gets tired of moving that much weight around for 8+ hours a day and being on your feet the whole time. I cannot even begin to describe to you how badly my hands are beat up along with my shins and toes. Things happen while working in a warehouse-you slip and fa...

Another Realization

As I finally have found some time to sit down and write a bit (work is simply sucking my summer away from me), I can't help but mention the man who in a way sort of inspired me to start this blog in the first place, Mark Titus. He, as I'm sure many of you know is the founder of Club Trillion (you can follow his blog if you want-I do) and has christened this week Nut Up or Shut Up Week because he is doing his best to post on his blog once a day. I mention this because since my own personal blog is called the "Daily Segs" one would figure that I would post on here every single day, and for a while I did do that. During spring quarter was when I began this little beauty and vowed to write every day. I have since gotten away from that for a number of reasons. The easiest one to blame it on is the fact that I'm working 40+ hours a week at a distribution center and after leaving there it is either really late or I am exhausted or both. But the main reason (it pains me t...

The Past Week in Review

I know it has been a solid week since I have written anything (sorry Mrs. Pearson) but I trust you can all grant me a pardon considering the week I just endured. Working sucks-we all know that. Especially when you're in a warehouse for hours on end, and the majority of people who you work with fit the category of being a dump in some way shape or form. I posted about six hours of overtime this past week, a direct result of a few things. First, Tuesday marked a massive inspection by the FDA so for those of us who were scheduled to work on Monday (including myself) cleaning after selection was finished for the day was going to be rather arduous because the place had to be "perfect." Add in the fact that the count was huge for that day and nearly every one of my co-workers embraced the idea that overtime was imminent, so why not get as much as possible, and I did not get home until 1 a.m. Tuesday morning. Of course when I left work it was absolutely pouring down rain, whic...

How I Feel About Tiger Woods

So it's been quite some time that I have written anything on here much less drafted a post that is based solely around something in the sports world, no matter what it being. Well it is safe to say I am here to change that right now. A lot of things have been going on in the world of golf lately, with of course the domination of Rory McIlroy at The U.S. Open in June a few weeks back to Tiger Woods' return to the scene this past weekend at the Bridgestone Invitational in Akron. McIlroy's win marked a possible new era for golf because of how many strokes he won by and for the fact that Tiger was nowhere to be seen as he was rehabbing from knee and leg injuries sustained earlier this year. Aside from that (because now it simply seems as if it is a mute point in the golf world) all everyone has been talking about on ESPN and any sport channel in general is Tiger Woods and he old caddie Stevie Williams. Now I say "old" caddie because Tiger recently cut ties with hi...

Candid Thoughts

As I begin enjoying the first of my two consecutive days off work, I decided that even though my job is very physically demanding that I just could not get enough and wanted to shed some sweat today. After waking up and having a bowl of Kashi (2 for $5 at Meijer yesterday and with my 10% employee discount I just couldn't say no) with blueberries on top, it dawned on me that it has been multiple weeks since I have shot much less touched a basketball. You could say I was suffering a bit of withdrawal, considering that I went outside in this heat and shot for an hour and then decided hey, I haven't ran in a while either. I then proceeded to take a three lap jog around the 'hood, and for those of you who say "That's not that much" or "That's all?" it is for me, alright. Let it go. I take pride in keeping myself in decent shape throughout the year because it makes me feel better about myself and keeps me healthy. Plus, there is simply nothing better t...
