Not An Unfortunate Son

On my day off on Thursday I went ahead and did whatever my heart desired, which is what I believe is expected of people who work at places like Meijer Distribution Center.

I did some things around the house, prepared lunch for my father and I, and played some video games-something I had not done in a very long time. I even got my Club Tril shirt in the mail, which could very well quickly become the best purchase I have ever made. I was unaware that I was also going to receive a photo of Mark "The Shark" Titus as well as a Club Tril sticker, so needless to say I was pretty excited.

Mom has to work late on Thursdays during the school year because it is a "shopping" day for Dayton area school teachers. As a result of this I met her there around 6 p.m. and once she was ready left with her to go grab some food and head to the Fairfield Mall to make some purchases for school. She bought me my first pair of boating shoes I guess one would call them-I just see them as another option to wear other than sandals or that sort of thing. I also informed her that I needed some more socks because a few of my short black ones are on their last legs and have quite a few holes in them. Plus, to quote the late great Albus Dumbledore (who yes I know is just a fictional character in what some of you would call a stupid book series in Harry Potter but I flat out don't care because I am a fan) from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, "One can never have enough socks."

It's evenings/nights like this that make me realize how lucky both my sisters and I really are. As I was spending some time at Mom's work helping her finish up some things and then not leaving until about 7 o'clock or maybe a little before, it hit me like a Mack Truck. My parents are truly awesome. I mean, as the youngest of three kids I am the last one that they have to worry about providing for and getting through college and I guess I have always known this to be true but never really appreciated it. Both of them are in their 50s, and are still working like dogs to support their children. My mother puts in long days sometimes (such was the case Thursday night) and I know that she was tired from the week but still found enough energy to take me out to dinner and shopping for a few things that I needed/wanted before I went back to school. We then stopped at Kroger for a few things that I call necessities in the house of Seger-milk, juice, yogurt, and cereal. You would not believe how many coupons the woman shelled out while we were there. Naturally they were used to save us a little cash, but if you know my mom you know how much of a coup fiend she is. And it's because of that we are able to buy nice things such as new clothing and what not. She has to save an unbelievable amount of money for her family each week by just using coupons, and the time she takes to cut them out has to be a tad consuming. But each and every week she does so, without any hesitation.

Now my father on the other hand is someone who, no matter how frustrated or annoyed I get with, I will always have the utmost respect for. He's been working the night shift for about four or five months now, and for as much as I bitch and complain about my work schedule and what it is, every time I think about his job I get put in my place a bit. Working nights has to get to him physically, for the simple fact that when he goes to bed is around the time my mom is waking up to go to work and yet he still expects himself to be back on normal schedule for the weekend. Crazy. Simply crazy.

I decided to write something about how awesome my parents are and how lucky I am to have them in my life because of Thursday night when I noticed how tired my mom was but it did not matter as she was still determined to provide for me. Both of them did this/are doing this for my sisters as well and I know that if you discussed it with them they would say the same thing regarding how fortunate we are to have them as their parents. I know that a lot of people in this world are not as lucky I am, and I just want to thank them for everything that they have done and continue to do. Any sort of verbage cannot do justice to explain how grateful I am for all that they do.

Proud Buckeye who's lucky to have Deb and Dennis Seger as his parents,

Eric Seger
