The Final Week

Yesterday marked the commencement of my final week of work at Meijer Distribution Center. I'm not going to talk about it anymore, except for maybe my last day when I'm sure I won't be able to control my happiness much like a little kid in a candy store. But all I can say is that it's been real. Now I'm going to take my money and run.

Yesterday was a bit of a trying one for my family and I, as news broke about one of my family members falling ill very early in the morning. I prayed for him both at church and while I was at work and I trust that the grace of God will help him get through the pain he is dealing with and back to the health that he needs to be at.

At work yesterday we had ten people call off (look, I know I said I wasn't going to talk about it anymore but I'm using this as a segway) and two more come in late because of how late they worked the night before. That marks the second time that at least ten people called off since I've worked there, and despite that we as a team really dominated yesterday. Sure, I did not leave the complex until about 11 p.m. and missed a fantasy football draft with some of my best friends from school (s/o to Tedwards-somehow got me my QB-Aaron Rodgers-you're the man) but for being down ten people getting finished with selection by 10 was quite an accomplishment. It just goes to show how quickly we could get things done if everyone showed up and we all busted our tails. I even got a free hat out of the day, because the supervisor on duty was pleased with all of us who pulled a higher work rate than the shift average for the day (average was 115%, I pulled 120%).

On the real side of things, I was even more upset that I missed the majority of the Reds game because it was very exciting and went 14 innings. Now, I know that a game between Cincinnati and the Washington Nationals really doesn't mean jack crap at this point in the season because Washington has a losing record and the Milwaukee Brewers are kicking the piss out of every team that they play, but hey. The Reds still have Joey Votto. They STILL have Joey Votto. And he is still the MVP. And still the man.

I was able to stick around long enough at home before leaving for work to watch the first inning of the game and to see Votto line a home run just barely over the right field fence using what seemed like no more than a wrist flick. The game apparently went back and forth after that, with the Reds bullpen blowing another Johnny Cueto W but the Reds were able to tie it in the bottom of the 9th with a pinch hit homer by Yonder Alonso (the future). It stayed 4-4 until the bottom of the 14th when Votto got up to the plate again with two outs. As my dad described it-typical Joey Votto plate appearance. Worked a full count and waited until he got something he liked, but the reality of it was that the walk-off home run (an opposite field job) was one that looked like Votto just threw his bat at and was able to reach the seats. As I said, he's still the man.

The win put the Reds a game above the .500 mark and like I stated in a previous blog post, their goal for the rest of the season is to finish above that. I hope they can and in some sort of a small miracle in a few years to come are able to sign Votto to a new contract. We'll see.
