Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit

After returning home from a day/nights hard work at the distribution center, I relaxed with a piece of apple pie and my sister and enjoyed the Reds almost piss away yet another win. They wanted to, really badly. I didn't get to see very much of the game since I was at work, missing the first 7+ innings because I was lugging around bags of potatoes, boxes of peaches oranges and blueberries, and the like. But after viewing the game recap it appeared to me that the Reds had a 8-0 lead going into the 6th inning thanks to a five run first and Bronson Arroyo pitching well. When I tuned in the score was 8-7, and the Cardinals being who they are had crawled almost all the way back. Now originally I was not a very big fan of closer Francisco Cordero when the Reds signed him because of his inconsistency. But he has been a different animal this season, and in my opinion was snubbed as an all-star. He then reminded me of maybe the reason he was not selected this year. He entered the game in the bottom of the 9th with a one run lead, a typical situation for a closer. Wasn't three pitches and the game was tied. He left a fastball over the plate to John Jay (no, not the American Founding Father) who promptly deposited it into the the right centerfield seats to tie the game. After finishing the inning I really hope he went over and apologized to Arroyo for blowing his W for him.

It's situations such as this that as a Reds fan you can't help but put on the Negative Ned had and believe that they are going to end up losing-I mean come on. An 8-0 lead in the 6th inning and the Cardinals tied it? But the game continued and went into the 13th inning still tied at 8. Then Dusty Baker inserted Ramon Hernandez as a pinch hitter with two on and two out in the 13th. He ripped a ground rule double down the line that scored Jay Bruce, the go-ahead run. Flamethrower Aroldis Chapman then came in to slam the door emphatically for the win. Reds 9, Cards 8.

As a fan I was relieved both that they won and that the game ended then because it was 12:30 and I was exhausted from the day at work and mowing the lawn.

After getting up this morning and eating Kashi and watching Sportscenter I logged onto Facebook only to be chatted by my beloved mother. We talked about last night a bit and how sore I am today, and she, being the amazing intellectual she is reminded me that that is why I'm going to school. To get a degree and hopefully get a job where I don't have to work in a distribution center. She couldn't be more right, and that got me thinking.

When Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence he stated that all men are guaranteed the unalienable rights of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. There are a lot of different explanations to this statement, and I'm sure there is one widely accepted definition of it that everyone agrees with. But in my own life I have come to believe that the Pursuit parts means that you are free to make your life into anything you want. After all, everyone's definiton of "happiness" is different, and no matter what it is you are free to chase after it in any way that you choose. Whether that is going to college, starting your own business, or following in your parents footsteps in route to the family business, you can do whatever the hell you want to make you happy. That's what being 'Murrikan is all about.

Live it up people. You've only got one life. Why waste time?
