Dealing with one of life's all important questions

So today after mercifully being released five minutes early from my history class-my third class of the day-the only thing that was on my mind was that I needed to play some basketball. I had to burn off some steam from sitting in class all day long prior to that point and all I wanted to do was shoot.

It has been raining literally all. Day. Long. There was about a two hour period where all it did was sprinkle a little bit but that's about it. I used that two hour block to mount my Huffy 3 Speed and head to the RPAC in hopes of some good ball. For those of you who are not aware of the Huffy 3 Speed I speak of, I encourage you to click the link above for the simple fact that the thing is sexy. Complete with a luggage rack on the back of it and one of if not THE most comfortable bike seats known to man, my dad found this little beauty at a garage sale at the end of this past summer. He got a sweet deal on it for me and I couldn't be more proud to ride it around campus.

I took the short ride to the RPAC, got a ball and started shooting around waiting to get into a game. After about twenty minutes a couple guys asked me to play and I got in a total of five games in about 2 and 1/2 hours of play. It was awesome. I had a great time running around and getting some shots up, and beating some pricks who thought they were all that and a bag of chips.

After losing one game, while I was sitting out waiting to play in the next one, I overheard a couple of my teammates talking about how one of their roommates was no longer at Ohio State but still comes to Columbus on the weekends to party. My curious side got the better of me, and I asked the kid about it. He said that his roommate had failed all of his classes fall quarter and had "freshman forgave them" (which means that you get a mulligan for screwing up in your first quarter at school because it's all a new experience to you). So the dude was all good going into winter quarter, taking the same classes and what not. My teammate the proceeded to tell me how he again did not go to class, or his midterms, or his labs, and skipped two of his finals. I was baffled after hearing this and couldn't help but say, "No wonder he isn't here anymore. If I were his parents I'd quit paying for him to be here all the time too."

This made me wonder to myself, what honestly goes through people like his roommates head when they decide to simply be a dump? Because there are a fair share of people who live in my dorm who go to sleep really late, wake up late and skip class, and just think they can coast through college much like high school. But the thing is, you can't. College isn't high school. You have to work at it. And it's oodles and oodles more expensive.

Now, there are different definitions of dumps. One is certainly the one I have just described, and another is someone who doesn't go to class or do anything productive because they are partying all the time. A lot of people go out nearly every night of the week and just blow their money at bars and what not to get drunk and have fun, and I just don't get it. Save that stuff for the weekend. I mean come on people, ever hear of the saying there is a time and a place for that? That stuff is always going to be there, and if you're going to pay extensive amounts of money to get an education, why wouldn't you get your rear in gear and do your homework and go to class and study during the week?

Another type of dump is one who is just lazy and never leaves their room and sleeps all the time instead of doing anything productive at all (i.e. schoolwork, working out, eating healthy, etc.). I've seen my fair share of dumps of these statures as well. And trust me, they never cease to amaze me.

Ok, I know you're probably all thinking hey everyone needs a day here and there to just chill and do nothing. I love those days. Make me feel like a bum, but I love them. Sometimes you're just in the mood to do that because of the weather (like today) or if you had too much fun last night and need to recover. It happens. Everyone needs those days. But if you need them/use them continuously? You're a dump. A huge dump.

The fella who I was talking about at the RPAC couldn't stand his roommate, and you could tell he had his head on straight. I understood where he was coming from, and and vow to never let myself get to that point.

In the sports world, those Redlegs won again in exciting fashion and I must say thank you to the Chicago Cubs to simply not caring at all about baseball. These guys are professionals and they had four-count em-four errors tonight! Are you kiddin me? There was no way the Reds should of had a chance to win. But hey, I'm not complaining.

The Mavericks and Thunder also kicked off their Western Conference Finals series tonight, and I gotta tell you I don't care who wins. I think both teams are sweet. I mean, I love Dirk-the guy has that German swag-but the Thunder have an average age of 25.4 years old. It'd be sweet to see them get to the finals. Regardless who wins, I just don't want to see the Heat win because of that one who calls himself the King.
