NFL Draft Day 1
I have never been much of an NFL draft goer, lover, or guru by any means but since the darn thing has been ESPN's life for over three weeks now and this is a sports blog I figured I should write something about it. Kicking off at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, the draft's first round was completed this evening. I really only cared about one pick, with that being Green Bay's at 28, but it was at least a little intriguing to see where the big name players were going and which teams were willing to make trades in order to move up.
The Packers got defensive with their first pick (thank God) and drafted DE Nick Perry from the University of Southern California. Even though I wanted them to pick up Courtney Upshaw from Alabama, I still am content with this pick because if you followed anything from the NFL last year the one thing Green Bay needs is defensive help. Perry is a big kid (6'3" 271) and Packer Nation is hoping he will serve as a nice compliment to Clay Matthews in the pass rushing part of the game.
Like I said, other than pick number 28 I really did not give a rat's patooty about the draft. I knew that Standford QB Andrew Luck was going first overall to the Colts and Baylor QB and Heisman Trophy Winner Robert Griffin III was going second overall to the Redskins. The rest of the picks all pretty much made sense as far as team needs go, except for maybe the Cleveland Browns' selection at 22. After picking up Alabama's behemoth of a tailback Trent Richardson with the third pick, according to a few of my roommates Cleveland's next pick should have been along the lines of a wide receiver or at the very least an offensive tackle. Much to their chagrin though, the Brownies failed to disappoint and came through with another head scratcher with Brandon Weeden, the 28 year old gunslinger from Oklahoma State.
The guy is a winner, he proved that last year at Okla. St., but this pick pretty much told me that the Browns are not in any way shape or form content with Colt McCoy at quarterback. I can't blame them, but I still thought he might have gotten one more year at the helm after hopefully getting some help on the offensive side of the ball with the draft. I think Weeden can certainly be successful but really do feel for Colt because that sucks. Real bad.
In other sporting news the Reds pissed away a chance at a sweep against the Giants today when Sean Marshall gave up a three-run homer in the top of the 9th inning to Angel Pagan that put the Reds behind by a run after leading 5-3 entering the frame. This ruined Homer Bailey's solid outing and a pinch hit homer by one Scott Rolen in the bottom of the 8th. This is really only the first time Marshall blew up this year, but one has to wonder-why wasn't Aroldis Chapman used in this game?
The Reds have a chance to get back to .500 tomorrow when they open a three game set against the Astros tomorrow night. If they don't win this series, well, I think they may have some soul searching to do.
That's about it for now. I had to fold my laundry in the midst of writing this so the fact that it's 1 AM and I have class in 8 and a half hours is telling me to go to bed. Good luck to everyone's teams in the rest of the draft this weekend and GO PACK GO!
