Independent America

So after about two months of being a world class dump and moving through my life acting like I want to have a career in sports journalism and yet doing nothing in terms of writing about sports, here I am.

The last month of school was quite a grind, which goes without saying if, like myself, you go to The Ohio State University or another school that acted on the quarter system for the 2011-2012 school year. There is nothing like taking finals in 90+ degree heat while your other friends that you graduated the worm that is high school with post/tweet/Instagram/annoy the hell out of you with photos and statuses about their summer vacations to God knows where. Honestly people, I understand that you are excited to work on getting your skin cancer on while getting hammered on the beach, river, pond, lake, etc. (as we all enjoy) but keep the stuff to a minimum. What do I mean by this? Throw up one status as you are leaving to go to your vacation's destination or send one tweet about it. Quit giving the rest of us updates on how long the drive is, how hot it is outside, or how you cannot wait to spend time with your closest besties for the next week wasting your parents money and making bad decisions. It's rather irritating and all you are doing is begging for an unfollow from me or and unfriend on Facebook.

Now that I got the rant out of the way, I think it's time to move on to more important things. Such as America just being well, America. I celebrated out nation's birthday by cruising down to Gallipolis, Ohio (for those of you who have not a clue where that is, you can click here to be brought up to speed) with my girlfriend to spend the day with her and her parents out on the Ohio River. It was the first time I had physically been in the Ohio River and I had a great time basking in how awesome it is to be American by not caring or knowing what time of day it was and getting my tan on. It's times like those where we should really appreciate all that has been given to us by those who have gone before us. Our lives would not be what they are today if it were not for those brave men and women who gave their lives for complete and total strangers, entirely by choice. Go Go USA.

In the sporting world, the Reds are suffering through their annual West Coast road trip where their offensive production goes awry and you stay up late watching them wondering why oh why Dusty Baker do you make the decisions you make. The loss last night to the Dodgers (their second in a row where they only mustered one run) coupled with Pittsburgh's (yes, Pittsburgh's) win against Houston dropped them one game out of first in the NL Central. Those pesky Pirates sit nine games up and as long as Andrew McCutcheon keeps putting up gaudy numbers, they look to be staying in contention. The Reds travel to lowly San Diego for the weekend series that starts tonight and send former Padre Mat Latos to the hill against former Red Edinson Volquez. You may remember these two fellas being traded for one another last year. Can't wait to hear ESPN/FSN Ohio talk about how rare it is to see two guys who were traded for each other have to pitch against each other the following year. Either way, go Redlegs.

In a snippet of NBA news (don't worry, I am not going to talk about that one guy from Akron who finally won a title last month-I am sick of hearing about it as much as you are) Steve Nash agreed to a sign and trade deal with the Los Angeles Lakers late last night. This is going to be a really interesting thing to watch develop, as Nash has gone on record as saying he could never see himself playing for the Purple and Gold, as well as Kobe simply being Kobe and being pissed off that Nash took his MVP in '06 after he averaged 35.4 points per game. Or the fact that with Phoenix, Nash helped boot Kobe's Lakers out of the playoffs in back-to-back years. I think they will be able to put their differences aside and work nicely together as long as Kobe is willing to come off screens and get the ball where he needs to in able to score. Everyone with a pulse knows Nash cannot defend, both because he is 38 and just a sucky defender, so hopefully Kobe can overlook it because some pressure should be taken off him with Nash's addition. That being said, they are still a long ways away from outlasting the Thunder in the West. I know OKC got ran by the Heat this year in the Finals, but the Thunder are still very young and are only going to get better. It would not surprise me to see the exact same teams play for the title next year barring any major injury.

That's about it for now, but below you can find a few links that could spark your interest. They do mine anyways.
