And this one belongs to the Reds!
Hooray! The Reds finally broke through against those fightin' Phils. Or against anyone for that matter. I mean honestly this whole losing-and losing by a lot-was getting really old. But they finally earned a W tonight, thanks to a Jay Bruce 3-run double in the top of the 9th with two outs. The final was 6-3 as good ole Coco Cordero just came in and mowed 'em over.
This should come to the many delights of Reds fans everywhere because after winning five straight Cincinnati had dropped six in a row and needed a win in the worst way. Johnny Cueto pitched fairly well, but did not get a decision but I'm sure he won't mind because he knows as well as everyone else in the clubhouse how badly his squad needed a win.
In other Reds beat news, my father informed me tonight that Edinson Volquez was sent down to AAA Louisville today. At first I was kind of confused about it, so I inquired why. He said that GM Walt Jocketty said in a statement that he needed to go get command of his fastball and essentially grow up just a tad and learn how to a true baseball player. After learning this, I guess that I should have seen this coming.
Dad and I had made note of how at times he looks as if he didn't care too much and to put it simply, sloppy. His hat was never on straight, and always had one or two buttons undone in his uniform with his chain flowing everywhere as he pitched. Now, I know that ballplayers (as well as every other professional athlete) likes to show their swag by what they wear, how they present themselves, and what they say. They deserve it. They are professionals after all. And I'll be the first to tell you, as a fan I think those guys who can pull off the arm sleeves (Ray Allen, Brandon Phillips, Jared Sullinger, etc.) look sweet. Sometimes I like to clown a bit with either my club buddies or whoever I'm playing with and wear a sleeve just to get a few laughs. But these guys are pros and can make it work.
Volquez, as I stated before, always seemed to look a little bit like he just got out of bed and said, "Oh yeah. I've got the ball today." I'm sure many of you may be in an uproar about me saying that but come on people. The guy's got electric stuff, which is evident by his all-star season a few years back after he came to Cincy from Texas. But this year he struggled to get out of the first inning but then was usually pretty solid and kept the other team's hitters in check. The fact that he could dominate people if he just put his mind to it shows anyone with eyes what he is capable of if he just concentrates.
Without a doubt he'll be back sometime soon this year (hopefully after he gets some stuff figured out) and then Aroldis Chapman can join him and throw some heat to get people out. I miss when he was doing what he does and the Reds had a feared pitching staff. They've taken a bit of a step back but I still believe, and maybe Bruce's big hit tonight will help propel them to a few more wins on the road trip. I mean I hope so, seeing as how they are on ESPN twice this week (Wednesday and Sunday nights). I'm also getting sick and tired of listening to Cleveland fans talk about the Indians because they beat Cincy this past weekend.
I'd love to continue hearing Marty say his trademark line, "And this one belongs to the Reds!" a few more times very soon. They gotta keep pace with those losers from St. Louis.
GO REDLEGS!
